As 1 in 6 Couples Face Infertility, Fertility Institute of Hawaii Hopes to Raise Awareness
Each year in April, the Fertility Institute of Hawaii recognizes National Infertility Awareness Week to raise awareness about the disease of infertility. In addition to highlighting the causes and treatments, doctors hope to encourage patients to understand their reproductive health and to remove the stigmas and barriers that stand in the way of building a family.
Infertility is very prevalent, affecting 1 in 6 couples. It is also something that people will often suffer in private rather than asking for help. If there is a known fertility concern, it’s important to seek help immediately. If you’re less than 35 years old, doctors recommend seeking assistance after one year of attempting conception. For those over 35 years old, seek assistance after six months.
Diagnosing infertility starts with a medical history and examination. There are a variety of reproductive tests that are used depending on these two things. Tests include an evaluation of the Fallopian tubes, uterus, ovaries, reproductive hormones, and sperm.
